The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, represented His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu, at the First National Sociological Conference held at Pristine Villa, Calabar.

The event, organized by the Department of Sociology, University of Calabar, had as its theme “The Sociology of a New Nigeria.” It also featured the unveiling of two academic books titled “Basic Psychology” and “Readings in Sociology.”

In his remarks, Senator Odey commended the Department for organizing a unifying intellectual event that brought together its distinguished alumni, including Governor Bassey Otu, Deputy Governor Peter Odey, and Chief of Staff, Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar, all proud products of the Department of Sociology.

The Commissioner received awards on behalf of the Governor and Deputy Governor in recognition of their outstanding contributions to governance and societal development. He further encouraged the department to sustain such academic engagements as a means of promoting knowledge exchange and national development.

Dignitaries at the event included Senator John Owan Enoh (represented by Dr. Frank Ekom), Dr. Emmanuel Ironbar, Barr. Chris Agara, and several other notable personalities.
