The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator (Associate Prof.) Stephen Odey, welcomed a delegation from Idomi Community in Yakuur Local Government Area, comprising Rt. Hon. Nelson Eteng, former Cross River State House of Assembly member and current Special Adviser to the Governor, Professor Mbeh U. Eteng, Col. Joseph Ubi Ifere, and Dr. Eni I. Eni, who paid a courtesy visit today, at the Ministry of Education Headquarters, Calabar.
The Idomi Community’s delegation commended the Commissioner for his timely intervention in Community Secondary School Idomi, where he oversaw construction during his time as Executive Chairman of Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). The delegation outlined pressing concerns that includes: inadequate teachers, renovation needs for dilapidated buildings, PTA levy issues, poor management by some principals and security shortages. They stressed that lack of security has resulted in criminal break-ins and theft.
The Commissioner thanked them for their visit, expressing gratitude for their dedication and passion to greatly improve the community’s learning environment.
Continuing, he further assured them of His Excellency, Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s dedication to revitalizing the education sector, addressing inadequate staffing concerns, as he promises to present their requests for school interventions. On new teachers recruitment, he said that upon the ongoing recruitment completion, some of the areas of concern will be addressed. Finally, he urged host communities to take ownership and protect government facilities within their localities.
