Commissioner for Education, Cross River State, Senator (Associate Prof) Stephen Odey, has visited the site of the Government Secondary School, (Model) Okpoma to ascertain the level of fire destruction of part of the school. During his visit, he discovered that the entire academic block was burnt, including the ICT room, computers, and solar system. Additionally, nearby buildings, including toilets, were also razed by the fire from a burning bush at night of Saturday to Sunday, yesterday December 8, 2024.
The Commissioner sternly condemned the school environment’s inadequate cleaning and directed the Principal to enhance premises cleanliness, a concern he consistently raised with all school principals. He then urged school staff to boost dedication while stressing host communities’ importance in taking government facilities in their communities as their own. The Commissioner stated he would brief His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, on the inferno’s damage extent.
